Although Samsung has launched its second concept of a foldable smartphone later than Motorola, it offers a much stronger configuration for the same amount of money. It also seems more mature in some respects.
The Motorola Razr caused excitement at its presentation, but its pricing strategy raised some eyebrows since the Lenovo subsidiary wanted to charge around 1,400 Euros (~$1,498) for a foldable mid-range smartphone. This was accompanied by the first reports of durability issues after the smartphone had been launched. There have been many reports of a rather weak hinge quality (see below), a reason why the Razr is probably a long time coming in this country.
While Moto talks about up to 50,000 folding operations, Samsung promises 200,000 with the Galaxy Z Flip without any loss of quality. In fact, we didn't see any problems in the hinge of the Koreans' smartphone in our test. Moreover, the Samsung phone offers a much more powerful hardware configuration, which is on par with high-end devices of 2019.
The Galaxy Z Flip can convince in our review, and Samsung also makes clever use of the smartphone's folding properties and even has a couple of adapted apps on board. In this way, the Flip can be used directly as a stand for video calls via Google Duo, for example.
The equipment is on a good level with a Snapdragon 855 Plus, 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of UFS 3.0 storage as well, although the Galaxy S20 Ultra offers a lot more features for a similar price. Even the small battery doesn't necessarily make the Flip an endurance runner, but it's still easy enough for one day of use. In addition, it also comes with convenient features like wireless charging.
